Urban Radio

Urban music is a music genre that is related to music genres such as R&B and Hip Hop. In the United States of America there was a cultural movement that formed during the 1970s among African American youths. In districts such as Harlem and The Bronx these young Afro-American men were almost practically living on the streets. A street culture was developed and this is also the meaning of the word urban. Urban music is very familiar to R&B and Hip-hop and that’s why artist such as Mario, Jay Z and NAS can also be classified as Urban artists. Urban music, such as R&B, is now widely played in the world but the music genre is not that old. R&B is a typical Afro-American music genre that originated in the late 1940s, 1950s. The name R&B stands for rhythm and blues because in the early stages R&B was a mix off rhythm and blues. The R&B music as we know now combines elements of not only rhythm and blues but also soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance.

In the late 90s and the early 2000s urban music became mainstream. Popular Urban artists such as R. Kelly, Mariah Carey and Eminem scored major hits. R. Kelly, often referred as the King of R&B, was born on January 8, 1967. R. Kelly was at a young age already inspired by music. Kelly’s biggest influence is without doubt the legendary King of Soul Sam Cooke. Kelly’s music took root in soul, R&B and Hip-Hop: a typical Urban artist. Kelly’s breakthrough came with the 12 Play Album. One of his most successful singles is ‘If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time’ but his biggest success was the single ‘I Believe I Can Fly’. The single was originally released on the soundtrack for the film Space Jam.
