History

The Mountain Chill story began in 1995 when Eric Funk was a graduate engineering student at the Univ. of Maryland and visited the San Juans on a weekend trip following an academic conference on the front range. Eric fell in love with the area and came back countless times to ski and hike in the intervening years, often visiting to ski with his brother, Ethan. By the early 2000s, both Eric and Ethan (The Funk Brothers) had their fill of the east coast pace. They both took the plunge and left engineering jobs to form Red Mountain Radio LLC, a radio frequency design firm headquartered in Ouray, CO. At the time, Ouray was the only community in the area with high speed Internet service. During that time the brothers started Mountain Chill® as an Internet radio station and background music for their work space. In 2011, Eric & Ethan jumped at an opportunity to finish the construction of KRKQ in Telluride and lease the signal to air Mountain Chill on the terrestrial airwaves; the then-owner had a construction permit and just a few months left to put the station on-the-air. The brothers finished the construction in 2011 and, in 2012, purchased the newly constructed station. Effective January 1st 2016, the US Copyright Royalty Board did away with the affordable Small Webcasters license that was offered by Sound Exchange and used by many small family-owned webcasting operations to cover music royalties. With the station's high online listenership, license fees would have reached over $30,000 per year. Mountain Chill was forced to suspend live webcasting while continuing on FM and sharing archived programing through Mixcloud.com. In 2018 Mountain Chill joined the Radio Coalition and revived Internet streaming, this time as a member station and under the Radio Coalition's license with Sound Exchange.
